has anyone started on looking at the packets that flow between the client and the server?
if so has anything been learned?
Yes, but not here.
We're (mostly :) ) about legal/non-EULA-breaking modifications here.

i was under the impression it was only a eula violation to use automated bots.
making a program doesnt break the eula, using it does.

But to answer your question the packets have been analyzed since January and a lot has been learned from them. Most of the packets are well documented in different places. But recently blizzard added encryption the the packet headers and possibly to some of the packets themselves.
