View Full Version : Map-Notes pre-populated with useful information . . .

Greetings,

I've recently started a project for my guild where I've been running about the different [Alliance] cities noting EVERYTHING:

1) Shops and what they sell
2) Trainers and Suppliers
3) Buildings of interest (bank, mailbox, auction house, etc.)
4) NPCs with names but not much else (probably quest nodes)

I have Ironforge completely marked up and have begun work on Stormwind. Darnassus is next. I imagine I'll have the three major (alliance) cities completed in a couple of days.

I have found that the only way to share ALL of my notes with people is to snip the MapNotes source from the "savedvariables.lua" file in my Account directory. Then have them replace the MapNotes section in theirs.

While this works well for people who haven't been using the MapNotes themselves, someone who has made notations will be wiped out with my content.

Here's my question. . .

Is there a way to send an entire zone's mapnote information in one go? If not, there probably should be. :)

Perhaps the feature could go something like:

send (1) note to friend [what we've got now]
send the entire ZONE to friend
send ALL MapNotes to friend

for the last two, there might also be need of an option:

only send the blue [] and red [] and yellow + notations.

Could something like this be implemented?

I'm sure that a very advanced version could check for duplicate notes (they would have to share the exact coordinates or potentially apply some fuzzy logic to determine how far away the new point needs to be before it's discreet).

Ok, enough rambling on my part.

If anyone is interested in the notes I've logged so far, I can post the MapNotes snippet I took from the savedvariables.lua, I'll be happy to post it somewhere (it's rather long and still growing).

Map Notes can't send all the notes you have (or simply some of them by using filters) because of a simple problem: Blizzard disconnects you, when you spam the chat! (and that every GUI makes much work) So I will have to write a AddOn that has a GUI and a "nice" loop to not get disconnected (you can't really use a loop then, because you have to split over more than one frame). But it's planned.

I'm sure that a very advanced version could check for duplicate notes (they would have to share the exact coordinates or potentially apply some fuzzy logic to determine how far away the new point needs to be before it's discreet).

That is already implemented... so you send a note that is too near to another already placed note the user gets a nice error msg.

What would be cool is if the mod automatically created notes for world objects.

You would be able to toggle all the different types of things on and off and setup an icon for each.

So it would be able to set it up to auto-tag herbalisit stuff with a green cross, then whenver you are playing and you target an earthroot or whatever, the mod would automatically make a note for it.

This would work for Herbalists, Miners, Treasure Chests, Mission Objects, Named Mobs, Rare Spawn Mobs (silver elite borders)

You can try Map Notes Gathering, it should mark Herbs and Veins, after you gathered them.

Note: You need Map Notes 0.4.5 (it doesn't check for this).

I actually had an idea about this as well.

Well I was thinking with the Quest Minion helper, maybe add a database of the quests and the key locations for them. Then the mod can plot the points on the map using Carto+ or whatever Cosmos is using right now. Just make finding quest mobs / items easier?

Sound like a good idea?

Make it offline map editor, that you can enter locs into. And maybe thottbot could start recording locations of quests in x,y coordinates. Then implement that slowly into the World Map.

Thanks for your time,

:?: Any idea where I can download this? This seems like a great tool, be EZShare says it's deleted. You have no idea how much work this tool would save me :).

Ther eis so much potential with the world map, if we can add quests and item locations. The possibilities are endless and extremely useful as well.

I can post what I have, but it's not a 'file' because of the way Mapnotes currently works. Instead of an external mapnote file, all points are embedded in the savedvariables.lua file that is shared by many cosmosui add-ons.

To that end, what I can do is post my 'snippet' of the mapnotes section for you to copy and paste into your own savedvariables.lua file.

There are a couple of problems with doing this though:

1) If you've been using mapnotes to create markers, copying and pasting over your mapnotes with mine will erase all of your notes—there isn't a clean way (that I've found) to merge notes.

2) If you don't completely replace the mapnotes code in the savedvariables.lua file with my 'snippet' you might break things because of not 'closing' the code properly or 'closing' it more than it needs to be. (I'm speaking of having too many ')' characters or other pieces of a function.

If you're still interested, I currently have ALL of ironforge mapped out (NPCs, Shops, Trainers and Points of Interest) Key points in Stormwind mapped out (Trainers, all NPCs in the Trade Area, some points of Interest) and some of Darnassus plotted.

I've been meaning to do more, but between actually PLAYING the game and responsibilities in real life, I haven't been able to be as quick to finish Stormwind and Darnassus.

I've posted the 'snippet' file here:

http://www.gamepride.com/WoW
(the file is called: "mapnotes_snippet.txt")

BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO THIS, MAKE SURE TO BACK UP the SavedVariables.lua FILE! Don't say I didn't warn you :)

To integrate my 'snippet' here's what you'll need to do:
1) Open up my snippet file, highlight ALL of the text in it and copy it to your clipboard (Edit/Copy or CNTRL-C)
2) In the WoW directory, locate the WTF folder and inside that the Account folder.
3) In the Account folder you will see a folder that's the same as your user login...open that.
4) Locate the 'SavedVariables.lua' file and open it with a basic text editor (Notepad, etc.)
5) In this file, you will want to use "search" to find the following line:

MapNotes_Data = {

6) Select this line and all subsequent lines until you come to this line:

MapNotes_MiniNote_Data = {

note: do NOT include the "MapNotes_MiniNote_Data = {" line in your selection.

6) Paste (Edit/Paste or CNTRL-V) my snippet from the clipboard over this selection.

In doing this (hopefully correctly) you will have overwritten any mapnotes you had (or didn't have) with all the notes I've created or gathered so far. I can continue to post updates to my 'snippet' file for those interested as things move forward but I believe that as more and more people start actually creating their own notes, adding mine will be more difficult without some kind of 'merge' functionality.

Now, if we could get mapnotes to look at a different savedvariable file . . . ;-)

Though I wont be handing out code, (id be to embraessed by my hash work) least this may give more capable coders an idea.

For my guild I created (mainly for mapnotes gatherer addon but the theory is the same) a parser that converted the gathering infomation to xml and uploaded that to a server.

Which is saved on the server with a unique name for that person, I then regually run a merge program that takes the data puts it into an array based on Continent, zone,XY coords provided ie (php)
$array[0][1][x][y]["id"]="blah" ... etc is continent 0, zone 1, xloc, yloc, save var
Then using that array writes a new xml file which is the combined data.

My guild members just paste their lua into a form and it then replaces the right bit with the new code, they then place the whole thing back into the savedvariable.lua.

Ok so its cluncky, but it means all our guild information on resources is shared without anyone bar me needing to know much more technical than cut and paste.

So far it seems to work very very well, if theirs a circumstance where x an y match (shouldnt happen often at all) I currently set it so the newest xml file wins, but anything else is possible.

Hope that gives some people some ideas,

Share the PHP Code :)
Someone could clean it up if neccessary and we could have a large scale one on a website.

Or send me the code personally...

rishid@gmail.com

And I will clean it up and we can have one running on the Cosmos Site or something.

completely stand alone gathering information gatherer.. marks herbs and minerals and other stuff you activate on terrain, like quest items
