I am not sure if I'm the only person here who uses multiple chat windows. But I can tell you that Sky does not respect (1) user-defined channels and (2) Turning off "major" channels in your General chat window.

Personally, i keep trade in a separate chat window that I undock only when in major cities. This separates the trade channel spam into something I can look over separately. It works very well. But when I return to a major city or perhaps even at other times, my General window fills up again with the channels I have explicitly turned off.

When I log in, my user-defined channels are always messed up. Sometimes they appear in the combat log, sometimes not at all. Sometimes it claims I'm in the channel and I can send but not receive. And sometimes I can do neither. On some occasions, it will get stuck "attempting to join..." If I am ever disconnected or crash, Sky is always out of synch on rejoin regarding user-defined channels, and I must /leave the channel (by name! not number) and log out, and then join again on login.

I am an incredibly savvy user and a LUA programmer as well, I've edited my SavedVariables.Lua file, reinitialized, resynched Sky... you name it. But the Sky concept just doesn't work. Silent communications between plug-ins is well and good, but you can't get this by taking over chat and badly cobbling it together again.

Honestly, Sky is not worth the headache. The sometimes-you-get-cosmos-channel-spam problem was INFINITELY preferable to not having a reliable chat system. Not everyone uses chat by having a single window with just the 5 predefined channels in it, and by all accounts it's not even working well in that case.

Please try to come up with a better solution. Perhaps Blizzard could be persuaded to add a /stell, /sparty, /sguild, /sraid options for "silent" versions of these commands that can only be read by plug-ins? But Lord, trying to keep the notorious SavedVariables.lua file "in synch" with your chat choices is just absurd. You're reimplementing functionality, trying to mimic behavior, and it's just not exact enough to work.

Patches to address your issues have just put up recently. Can you grab a fresh copy of the Alpha and see if you have an easier time keeping things as you want them.

I agree with Plynx completely. I've had serious problems with the channels, and with weird error messages when I try to join. I can't see the general or trade channels at all, no matter what I do, and the colors I've picked for emotes and things keep changing, seemingly at random.

I just want my chat to work the way it used to. It may not be a popular point of view, but I'd rather have less functionality, and fewer headaches, if there has to be a compromise.

I don't enjoy updating and editing and messing with plug-ins and files nearly as much as I enjoy just playing the game, hassle-free. I loved the idea of small, optional elements that I could use to customize things, but now it seems more and more things are required. Please make it possible for us to choose what we need, and not force us to accept that which we don't.

Neferi... if it is causing you that much hassle then maybe Cosmos isn't the add-on suite for you. Most of the developers are tring their best to make Cosmos as user-friendly as possible. If you don't like something then stop using it. If you don't like certain aspects of Cosmos then you can remove those from the AddOn menu, at your character select.

Plynx,

I have made a few changes to Sky over the last two days. If you get the latest Sky (r1305 or later) it will have those changes. Hopefully with those changes you should find it is a little more usable than what it was before.

Unfortunately for those of us having huge problems with Sky, Cosmos is set to depend on it. Why I have no idea. Someone said it was to make it available to all Cosmos modules but why can't the modules that want to use Sky set their own dependancy to it. I'm sure most of the modules I use and like in Cosmos have no need for Sky yet when I disable it most of them stop working because they depend on Cosmos and Cosmos depends on Sky.

One reason could be so that if you want to take advantage of any of the Cosmos libraries you can just make it so that your add-on depends on Cosmos and that would give you Sea, Sky and Chronos.

The main reason though is that Cosmos USES Sky to setup chat commands. That can probably be changed in the future but to make the register slash command in Cosmos compatible with older add-ons it has to have that dependancy.

If anyone is having problems though instead of just stating you have a problem it might be useful to post in the Sticky thread on Sky chat issues:

http://www.cosmosui.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8891

As that is the thread that is being monitored to track Sky bugs and get them fixed.

I ONLY want to disable quest info being shared and gathered from other players. THAT IS ALL I want different out of the whole cosmos.

Must I disable sky and everything else associated with it ?

The easy workaround is to click on the little cloud underneath your name, and uncheck the various Sky channels (Sky, SkyParty, etc).

I used to have serious problems with the major channels just not working in Orgrimmar. I could read them but not talk in them, or they'd completely vanish, or their numbers would be wacky, etc, etc. This fixed it all.

You can leave the Sky addon enabled, so that other addons which *think* they really need to use Sky will still work.

You will get noise from PartyQuests and Sky about not being able to use the Sky backchannels. Ignore them. I left PQ on for the nice all-20-at-once window; the inter-player communication has never actually worked for me (it just sits at "Building..." or whatever and never completes).
