I'd appreciate if there was a changelog available, so that people would see if their specific bugs have been fixed in a new (alpha) release or if new features/addons have been added/removed.

Ah, it's called Cosmos.txt located in your world of warcraft folder. Scroll down past the top part to get to the individual build release notes.

Well, that file should then be updated more often. The last date is 3/22/05 and there is a new release everyday.

Well, then it says 4/1/05. But everyday a new version comes out. What's with the changes made in those versions? Or does a new date in the download section not necessarily mean that there are any changes since the previous version?

No even futher down that - every single build has an entry. Here are the top few from my Cosmos.txt downloaded today:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
r1347 | rustak | 2005-04-17 14:06:31 -0500 (Sun, 17 Apr 2005) | 1 line
setting this to default disabled, as its useful only to 1 class, and spams on startup
------------------------------------------------------------------------
r1346 | sarf | 2005-04-17 13:04:01 -0500 (Sun, 17 Apr 2005) | 1 line
BetterKeyBinding - fix for height issue. Thanks Marsman!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
r1345 | sarf | 2005-04-17 05:05:17 -0500 (Sun, 17 Apr 2005) | 1 line
ThottBot - fix for bug 423, wherein the ThottbotLocationFrame.unit was nil which made UnitName(this.unit) return nil to the WorldMapTooltip:SetText function.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
r1344 | geowar | 2005-04-16 14:51:59 -0500 (Sat, 16 Apr 2005) | 1 line
Added note icons to the player, party and target frames

--Thott

r1342 | mugendai | 2005-04-16 03:06:36 -0500 (Sat, 16 Apr 2005) | 5 lines
BarOptions:
-MCom has been updated in a way that allowed me to throw out several hundred lines of code in BarOptions.
-A couple other changes envolving moving the left side bar over when using the sidebar setup. This may not be working quite right(like the bar might not be staying put between reloads) and could possibly interfere with MobileFrames, need to test and discuss with people.
-I think a couple other things, but it's been over a week since I did the changes, and I've been really busy with things that absolutely had to take my attention, so I forgot what the other stuff might be.
-The deal where BonusActionBar_OnUpdate was being changed to override like ActionButton_OnUpdate has been removed. This is not the same thing at all, BonusActionBar_OnUpdate occurs only when the BAB gets an OnUpdate event, ActionButton_OnUpdate occurs when any action button in the native bliz ui is updated, which is well, a whole lot of buttons alot of the time. BonusActionBar_OnUpdate is infact overridden with an empty function anyway, if anyone can provide me evidence that this is causing an actual jitter, I will manually set it, but I seriously doubt that it is.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
and many more entries below that. When I said scroll down, I meant scroll down - not take the first date you see in the general blurb.

Speaking of which, is there a web interface or anything to the version control system that the devs are using? There are times it would be helpful to see the actual code diffs between patches in order to track down new problems (like the invalid call to 'next' that sprung up recently.)
If not, could there be? I know they're not using CVS. Is it Subversion?

Now I found it. But would you expect the latest changes to be found at the bottom? ;)

Is there anonymous Subversion access? I would have expected to see the URL on the download page. (I admin several Subversion repos.)

No there is no anon access.
With the next patcher you will be able to see which file change between patchings and old files will be saved as 'prepatch for review and reversion.
