Well up until Sky appeared Mapnotes was quite nice..

We could transfer notes from any mapnotes user to any other providing they were running the same version..

However , now that is not the case.

We can ONLY send/receive mapnotes to other players who are also running the "Cosmos" Version of mapnotes... regardless of version number of the origina mod.

What I mean simply is that I downloaded the stand alone version of mapnotes, which uses the same base version number as the one in cosmos however a friend tried to send me several notes and none of them worked, nor could I send him notes.. as soon as I put back my old cosmos version, which utilizes Sky rather than the old method, it worked fine.

Are there any plans to either:
1) Modify Cosmos-Mapnotes to work with the stand alone version?
2) Change the name to something OTHER than mapnotes so people know that they are not compatable anymore.. perhaps CosmosNotes or something similar.

For those wondering, the reason is simply that cosmos ripped out much of the code for sending/receiving notes and utilized SKY to intercept those messages, the stand alone version uses the old method. (Though I'm not convinced the Sky method is any better actually).

I'm probably going to remove the Cosmos version from my own personal collection and use the stand alone as it's more compatable with the majority of the users out there, until a happy medium is found I suggest users who have friends or guildmates that do not use cosmos, to do the same.. the original version can be found on Curse-Gaming or other UI websites.

Or you can tell everyone else to download cosmos, then disable everything they dont want in the addons menu.

The Cosmos Version has several dependencies, such as SKY and others which do take up needless resources if the only addon you want to use is Mapnotes.. the standalone takes quite a significiantly less amount.

Not to mention there's no way I can convince an entire server to download cosmos :)

I have not checked the stand alone version of MapNotes, but the one in Cosmos "was" broken when it came to player to player note sharing. Party Notes were coming thru fine but player to player notes were still sending whispers. Problem was the recieving side was setup to use Sky only and was missing the whispers.

I made changes to Mapnotes to send player to player notes using Sky which eventually got rolled into the cosmos alpha - which is why if both users have the cosmos version - it works.

What you could do, is to fix the recieve side of things for the cosmos version so that it detects either the whispers or sky messages. This would only allow the cosmos user to recieve a player to player note from the standalone version however. Because MapNotes will detect cosmos, it will attempt to send the player to player notes using Sky - assuming the recepient user has it also. The cosmos side would have to try to detect/guess which recievers are cosmos users and which are stand alone and wouldn't be reliable either.

Perhaps cosmos version should just bump a version number to 55 to make the distinction as there isn't really a good fix to the problem.

Yep yep.. I'm aware of the original bug.. heh I'm the one who posted the problem and solution on the boards here :)

However the problem basically is that we now have TWO distinct incompatable versions of Mapnotes... If they were two totally different names it wouldn't be a problem as people would understand that "CosmosMapPoints" is differen't from "Mapnotes".

Changing the version is good for those of us technically inclined, but if someone updates the original we'll end up with versions jumping each other and whatnot...

My opinion is to simply rename the one in cosmos to some other name, that way people won't think they are compatable when they are not.
