so I've seen at least 3 different ways to spare non-cosmos addons from the updater:
1) create a file in warcraft\...\AddOns\ called "AddOnName.nopatch" (this is what I do)
2) create a folder in warcraft\...\AddOns\ called "AddOnName.nopatch" (eg. Auctioneer)
3) create a file called "nopatch" in the individual AddOn directory (per the 'Read first' sticky)

will all of these continue to be valid? I'm just worried that I'm gonna log in one day and then have to go digging through the recycle bin for my old AddOns.

same here. I've started using the third method you list, just because it leaves the addon directory tidier. but I wonder which one will be permanent.

theirs no particular reason to stop supporting any of them.

Not like the extra 5ms of processing time hurts

I don't think anyone will be removing them
