I just downloaded the new Cosmos patch and had that setup freeze and hit alt + f4 and got around to the patcher buttons working so while it was updating and downloading the files (1361.563 kbytes) it wouldn't update at all it just stayed at 0. Then I got a window saying "There was an error communicating with the server".

I get "Error Communicating with Server" near the end of the "Downloading" part of the patching every time.
Just started having this problem when I tried out patching with Alpha because of the ShardTracker problems and saw that Alpha updated it. Then I tried Alpha a few times again and it kept happening.
I then switched back to Release and then it didn't even start downloading, it checked the files then gave me:
"Error Communicating with Server" then
"There was an unhandled exception" happened twice.
It looks like the patcher has an update for today (Wednesday) so I'm downloading that now and will try to update with that and see if the problem is still happening.

Downloaded the new Patcher file from the Downloads page and the patching started working again. Works great, everyone go Download the new patcher from the downloads page:
http://www.cosmosui.org/index.php?p=download
Hope that helps.

Are you guys running it behind a firewall of some sort. If so it could be blocked from accessing the internet.

I'll put something into the next version to track the progress in the log and put some info in the log to help figure out what is going wrong.

Hi,
This is driving me nuts!! I've shut down my firewall and have followed every link and downloaded the new patcher several times--but I keep getting this "errror communicating" message when I try to run the update for the patcher...it says I have 5169.377 Kb to download.
I've been searching the forums but am not sure what it is I need to do to fix this problem. I'm not geeky enough to go in and really change a lot of things I just want my cosmos working again!! /cry
Please could you put a basic users explaination of what it is I need to do?? It's not my internet connection and I have my firewall off...what next?
Thanks

Not really sure what the problem is if you turned off your firewall. What version are you using? early versions had a hardcoded IP and I beleive that the IP isn't valid anymore since the patch server changed machines.

I'm using 3.8 I know for certain games I've had to set my firewall settings to d/l but if it's turned off that shouldn't be the problem right?
Thanks for looking into this, I know it's probably frustrating not sure if it's user error or what. But I really don't know what else to try and I miss cosmos *whine*
Thanks

Don't assume because you turn it off it's really off some I've heard are not really completly off. You might try to add it to your download list and see if that helps.

I an very frustrated with Cosmos right now i have been using it for the past month or so and it was working great!!! When patch 1.10 came out Cosmos took a dive on me..... for the longest time it wouldn't update, it would be stuck on the ALLINONEINVENTORY.LAU file so i deleted those files and tried again.... So i deleted Cosmos and now i get the error message saying REQUESTING CHANGED FILES DOWNLOADING 0 OF 10338.77 and then shortly after i get the error message "THERE WAS AN ERROR COMMUNICATING WITH THE SERVER" i would really love to get back to using Cosmos. I have tried downloading it from the www.thottbot.com, and straight from www.cosmosui.org download page. Nothing seems to be working and from what i can see in the forums, its been happening to alot of people. Please lemme me know ASAP what is going wrong so i can fix my end of things

If you have used v2.2 from thotts website and tried using the 3.x versions and both are not working then it's something with your computer.
Might I suggest you look at getting Adaware SE from lavasoft or Spybot Search and Destroy and have them scan your system to see if there is any spyware.
Spyware can cause problems with programs that use the internet. If you say well it worked before and they are not working now it's entirely possible you picked something up recently.
If the patcher is getting past the Connecting to server then it's a problem I'll have to look into.

The issue is with the patcher communicating with the server I have the exact same issue running version 3.8 I have a FreeBSD Firewall that disabled temp for testing same issue. I would suggest coding a port that is normally open for normal xfer as well as building a error logger for the patcher. I just manually update the files for now.

I also had this problem..
I fixed it by, first removing cosmos***** from my Norton Internet Security, Firewall. And then manual adding it again..

I am having this problem aswell, i have Ad Aware, and ran it, and it came up with nothing, i have tried uninstalling all cosmos files, as the site says to do it, and nothing seems to fix it. It give me the error every time when it gets to the Requesting Changed Files part, and when it get's there the size of the file it's trying to download seems t get bigger. I don't know what to do, all i know to do is to install the manuel things, but i don't see a full install of cosmos there, and i want to be able to install everything.

Experiencing the same problem as most of the people posting here.
Opened port 8087 on my router just to make sure it wasn't blocking anything.. which regretfully did not work.
I have no firewall installed (including the xp thingie), and multiple checks on spyware with lots of different programs, none found.
The old patcher works just fine though!
Thanks for your time,
Forgie
Same problem.
Refuse to connect to server.
No firewall and don't have problems with other services (msn, icq, irc etc).

i got that error one day... figured i try this and it worked like a charm..
sense all settings are stored in the WTF folder...
I deleted everything that said cosmos in the \wow\ folder
and i deleted everthing in the interface folder... (i have back up copied/zips of all my other mods that i KEEP)
and then copied the Cosmos patcher back into the wow folder and it ran PERFECTLY after that, just had to figure out how to use it and worked fine.

Some people have had some success applying the changes described in the http://www.cosmosui.org/showthread.php?t=54031 post, but not me.
dormlock, this doesn't seem to be a firewall issue, but a network card setting issue. Maybe you can figure out something from the post I just left on that other thread.
