using patcher 3.8(0)...
it goes through and checks all of the files
then gets to the download screen and times
out trying to connect to the server.
has anyone had any problems with this?

Same for me.
The download times out.
I am behind a router... is there any specific port that should be opened ?
TIA

It's using normal transfair protocols, so if you can browse the web and download files, the downloader can also get through.
A firewall can block Cosmos***** from network access, while allowing your browser to run fine or the internet can have a bit of trouble.
Try again a few times to see if it works.
You can always manually download Release/Alpha bundles from http://www.cosmosui.org/ if the problem persists until the installer author can fix the problem.

I've got 2 separate machines sitting side by side on the same network. On one the cosmos_win patcher r3556 works fine, on the other it hangs and never completes the download after it does seem to successfully check.
I finally get a "There was an error communicating with the server". This can be at the exact same time the other machine's patcher works flawlessly.
I'm wondering if there's some sort of permissions issue that throws this error because the patcher cannot download it's bundle to a temp folder or something.

The patcher doesn't write any files until it actually replaces files you tell it to. The downloaded files are stored in memory till then.
Im having the same problem. The patcher gets through all the checks, then when it tries to download the files it says it cant connect. Anyone figure out what was up?

I am running my PC and my laptop side by side and my laptop has no problems updating with 3.8 or 3.9, yet when i use cosmos***** to patch or update my cosmos on my PC, it checks the fils then times out when trying to communicate with server in much the same manner that everyone else here is stating... any ideas?
We have 4 computers here and all of them come up with the error message. Not sure why either this is happening.
I just downloaded the windows installer v3.9 and it gives me this error, and I noticed each time I hit install, the size it tries to download when it hangs seems to double.
I realized my issue was my firewall on my router stopping me.
I'm set to the DMZ for when I try these kinds of things. So all ports are open for me and I still get that problem

I am kind of surprised here.
It seems we're many having this problem but nobody is realy providing any solution. I did a check with other players ingame (on a French server)and actually many (not to say all of them) are updating manually as the patcher does not work for them too. Could this be considered as a problem and being investigated properly ?
TIA

I am kind of surprised here.
It seems we're many having this problem but nobody is realy providing any solution.
That is because currently there is no solution. It is not known why some people are having that problem. Can't give an answer without knowing the answer.
Some people might figure out what the problem is, but they do not return to tell their solution because they do not need to return.
Mogda

Thanks Gryphon for your answer.
I found out that all config I was able to test are behind a router (with address translation). Could it be the problem ?
Basically my PC is setup 10.0.0.10 while my router is 10.0.0.1 from the inside and 89.55.44.33 from the outsite...
I know this can affect file transfer using regular FTP transfer. To fix this user must use a passive mode transfer -- which IE can do and maybe patcher cannot.
Also I would be more than happy providing the support team with a complete log file if it can help work it out.

I fixed it by using a different network card; using a NF4 mb with 2 rj45 jacks, switched it to Marvell one and it worked.
Hope this helps!
Ugh. Last thing I want to hear is I have to change hardware to get my software to work :?

I have this problem as well. Turning off my firewall does not fix the problem. If I download the files manually and install them and then run the patcher, it still comes up with a bunch of files that need patching. Is the only way to get real time patches is with the automatic patcher, or are the real time files always updated in the manual downloads?
Mogda

New patcher does not solve the problem for me either...
Same problem, same error...
**disapointment**
I have confirmed that changing to a different nic on my mobo fixed this issue. Weird.
What network card did you previously use, and what did you change to. Also, was it wireless or wired?
In addition, can you provide the model of your mobo? This seems odd to be a hardware problem, but if we all have similar set ups, the Cosmos team might be able to come up with a fix.
Error remains as of v 3.9(7).

I have a DFI NF4 SLI-DR mobo with two integrated Gigabit NICs; one is the NF4 NIC, "Vitesse VSC8201", the other "Marvell Yukon 88E8001. I was plugged into my home network (which is behind a router) with the NF4/Vitesse NIC and getting the same server error, but after reading this thread I tried the Marvell NIC, and THE PATCHER WORKED FLAWLESSLY. I'm pretty confused about this one.

+1
I have exactly the same problem (french player and error connecting to server).
I also have a nvidia nforce 4 SLI and I swapped from NF4 NIC to Marvell Yukon just as anthezium did and IT WORKS NOW !!!
Now do it come from the interface or from IP change (I use DHCP) ?
That's strange...
Wow! It is finally working for me!
Not really sure why its working currently, as it is the same version I report earlier in this thread as not working, but I have a theory.
I have been having this weird disconnect issue with WoW and it was really bugging me so I checked out their support forums and saw a Blizzard tech giving some support for network cards and some options that need to be set properly.
I changed two options and it seems to have helped dramatically with disconnects. They happen more rarely than they were (only disconnected once since then).
The settings I changed for my network card (wired ethernet card) are:
Checksum Offload - Changed this to "disabled"
Speed/duplex settings - Change this to "Force 100 Full Duplex"
These settings are found in the properties of your network interface card which is located in the device manager.
If you are having similar problems, I suggest writting down your old settings and giving these ones a shot to see if the problem is solved! This is the only thing I have changed which would affect connectivity to a server.
Good luck with fixing the problem, I hope this will help.

DNE,
I too had this problem.
Luckily i found this thread really quick.
I did what you said, and it works fine now.
I will see about intermittent disconnects now.
Maybe it too is fixed!!
Thank you very much

I changed the 'checksum offload' too and it worked - for my card I use gigabit, so I left the speed to gigabit. I had 4 'offload checksum' options - Receive IP, Receive TCP, Send IP and Send TCP.
I'll also watch for the intermittent disconnects being fixed - I've had them a lot.
EDIT:
Within 2 - 3 days, the error started to reoccur.

I also changed "Checksum Offload" to "disabled" and it works perfectly !

DNE, thank you for posting your solution, it is not often people return to explain how they fixed a problem.
WOW! I'm so glad it worked for others. I completely forgot about this thread as I had fixed my problem, but at least it helped others.
I found this info on the World of Warcraft Tech Support forums. People were complaining about the disconnects and a tech had recommended changing those settings, and that also worked for this.

You mention "normal transfer protocols", which is nice and all, but... can't we just get a conformation as to what port it's using? It'd be nice to just be able to plug in a port to my firewall and have it allow it. :(

What protocol does it use. Seems like offloading the checksum calculation to the driver would point to a packet loss problem. I have the same problem and haven't been able to overcome it either. This just started out of the blue for me as well.

the patcher uses port 8087.
I was having this issue as well, but I'm using TPF5, as soon as I added a rule to the FW for the port num it worked.
I'd say that the problem may be primarily a FW one, but some ppl may get hardware issues that duplicate the prob.
If the FW fix doesn't help it may be hardware, and DNE's fix is applicable, if it still doesn't work, it may be your ISP is at fault, a lot of ISP's won't tell ppl what traffic they allow and sometimes they may block FTP from non IE / MS apps. I know for a fact that some Irish (where I am) ISP's do this.
I had same problem tryed DNE's solution, bet there was no Checksum Offload contrall so i just played a little with properties and it worked. I Changed:
Adaptive Interrupt: Enable
Connection Type: 100BaseTx Full Duplex
Flow Control: Enable (not hardware)

It seems to me that alot of people with nVIDIA nForce motherboards are having this problem (probably because of the Gigabit ports). I just got a new computer (nVIDIA nForce 680i motherboard) and am having this problem.
I read all of the messages, browsed over to the worldofwarcraft.com pages mentioned, changed all the settings:
Checksum Offload: Disabled
Speed/duplex settings: Force 100 Full Duplex
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power: Unchecked
Updated the motherboard/network drivers: Yes
Firewall allows full access to Cosmos: Yes
Router forwards TCP port 8087 to computer: Yes
Reboot after all the changes: Yes
Set the Firewall to log everytime Cosmos connects to the internet:
Rule "Cosmos" permitted (patch.cosmosui.org ( 74.52.18.58 ), 8087).
Outbound TCP connection.
Local address,service is (0.0.0.0,XXXX).
Remote address,service is (patch.cosmosui.org ( 74.52.18.58 ), 8087).
Process name is "C:\Games\World of Warcraft\Cosmos_Win\Cosmos*****".
(the XXXX number is different every time)
Ran a tracert command on patch.cosmosui.org:
(only top and bottom of log are shown here to protect my external IP address):

Still I get "There was an error communicating with the server."
(Sometimes after changing a network card setting, I'd get the error RIGHT after I click the Install Cosmos button while it's tring to download the TOC files to know what to patch, but I'd click the button again, and it would connect to get those files again. It always hangs on "Downloading files (0 of 8440.322 Kbytes)".)
I hope this info helps you help me.

So i looked at all the previous replies. and it sucks to hear that its hardware conflicting with software. Well...some ppl think it. Some dont. It seems very random too. But unfortuntely it seems to hate nForce motherboards. =( So i tried looking for the checksum and full duplex options on my network card. There is no checksum option and i turned the duplex to 100mb full. I have no problems with random drops or anything but i still cant download cosmo addons. Anyone have any new info or suggestions? Does anyone know if its a certain OS(vista?)

I use Vista and it works just fine. You can download the addons by zip, the patcher is only a convenience, not a necessity.

Like several others, I tried adjusting NIC settings to no avail. I'm wondering if it could be a timeout issue based on slower or more latent connections. (Actually, I'm fairly positive that it's my problem - I'm wondering if it's why others are struggling as well.)
I'm playing on dialup. (Which, BTW, WoW usually responds quite nicely on, which impressed and surprised me.) Most the time, I have to try two or three times to use the patcher (and the speed of my connection makes redownloading the whole package an unpleasant idea), and at some points, I simply can't do it - but another day (when my crappy phoneline is less noisy, perhaps), the ability returns.
I also have a laptop. Sitting in a coffee shop on broadband wireless, I have never had a problem, though that is a relatively small sample set as yet. At home, it seems to be as likely to fail as my desktop.

As regards the post I made. You can find the "Distribution package with the patcher" by doing the following :
1. Start the patcher.
2. Hit Cancel Patch.
3. Hit Configure.
4. On the first tab Cosmos, you will find the distribution package selection at the top.
