Is there a setting so that when I hit a crit it shows above the targets head?

I think you can enable the overhead numbers for your target somewhere in default UI. Try hitting Esc and then examine both tabs for this option. When it's enabled when you crit the number is displayed in a bigger font.
Also with some modest scripting I beleive that you can make SCT to do just that. Read SCT's readme file on how to manualy configure it.
